Whispered Art History by Robert Filliou (1926-1987) claims: “It all started on 17th of January one million years ago… Than…on the 17th February 100.000 years ago, man took handful of snow. He held it to his ear. He squeezed the snow hard. He heard…Try it sometime! Take a bottle of vinegar in your right hand. In your left hand take a piece of chalk. Let few drops of vinegar fall on the piece of chalk and see what happens. But perhaps what you see is not important…”
Like the secret of permanent creation the oldest known reference of Lycium barbarum – the fruit that became popular in western culture for its supposed promotion of longevity – may be found in the Epic of Gilgamesh, the historical Sumerian King of Uruk who ruled arround 2700 BC. The clay tablet 11 in cuneiform script reads: “There is a plant…like a boxthorn…If your hands reach that plant you will become a young man again.” However, the immortality seeker Gilgamesh finds death eventually.
The same plant is mentioned later in the Book of Proverbs as besetting the paths of the wicked (Proverbs 22:5) but this Biblic reference leads towards Abrahamic religions, in particular Christianity. Celebrating timelessness on the occasion of 1.000.054 Art’s Birthday, “Hereafter the beginning” project explores paradigmatic eternalism of trains that have no stops, parabolic symbolism of languages that babel indefinitelly, pieces of music that continue sounding after the last page of the score has been performed…
