Fred Frith in “Step Across the Border”

Art’s Birthday 2019: Cut Up the Border
by Fred Frith, Nicolas Humbert and Marc Parisotto
Deutschlandfunk Kultur in collaboration with Bayerischer Rundfunk

The movie „Step across the border“ hit the scene of improvised music in 1990 and almost immediately became a legend. Over the course of two years the filmmakers Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel followed musicians like Fred Frith, Tom Cora, John Zorn, and Iva Bittová. They traveled the world with them, covered concerts and jam sessions in hotel rooms and outdoors. The result is a movie that is just as virtuously improvised as the music.
But only a small portion of the recorded material has made it into the final cut. The original tapes have been stored in a metal box and were almost destroyed by flooding. 28 years later filmmaker Nicolas Humbert opened this box again. For Bayerischer Rundfunk and for Deutschlandfunk Kultur, he has rearranged and recomposed the raw material.
On the 17th of January he will present a sound piece at Babylon cinema in Berlin. Guitar legend Fred Frith will improvise live, musically responding to an echo of his own past.

Fred Frith was born in Heathfield (Great Britain) in 1949. He is a multi-instrumentalist and a composer. He became well-known as a guitarist for bands like Henry Cow, Art Bears, Massacre, Skeleton Crew, Keep the Dog and Cosa Brava. Since the 1980s he has ranked among the most influential figures of international improvised music. He has composed works for movies, dance theaters and orchestras, among others for Ensemble Modern, Concerto Köln, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles. Fred Frith is a Professor Emeritus at Mills College in Oakland.

Nicolas Humbert was born in Munich (Germany) in 1958. He is a filmmaker, author and founder of „Cine Nomad“. He has produced many movies, among others „Middle of the Moment“ (1995), „Brother Yusef“ (2005), „Wild Plants“ (2016). „Step Across the Border“ has received many awards like the European Film Award, Hessen Film Prize, Uppsala Filmkaja and Golden Gate Award.

Marc Parisotto was born in Marseille (France) in1957. He works as a composer and sounddesigner for movies. He has studied electroacoustic music at the conservatory of Marseille. Collaboration with filmmakers like Michael Haneke, Hans-Christian Schmidt, Heiner Stadler, Benjamin Heisenberg, Rainer Kaufmann, Philip Gröning. In 2006 he received the German Film Prize and in 2010 the Austrian Film Prize .
