A tribute to Study for One Cymbal Stroke by Włodzimierz Kotoński and its creator- on the sixtieth anniversary of the creation of the piece

In January 2019 it is the 60th anniversary of the production Concrete Study (for One Cymbal Stroke), known as a Study for One Cymbal Stroke by Włodzimierz Kotoński – the first polish independent electroacoustic piece. It was created in January 1959 in the Polish Radio Experimental Studio. That is why Polish Radio’s Program 2 invites to the Szpilman’s Studio situated one floor below (ground level) the historical Polish Radio Experimental Studiocin the main building of the Polish Radio. Concert will be a tribute to Włodzimierz Kotoński and his piece (created in another small room of the old, main building of the Polish Radio).

At the beginning, the studio was located in one of the small rooms (recording and reproducing stations) of the Polish Radio’s building. And this is where the Study for One Cymbal Stroke by Włodzimierz Kotoński came into being. Then the studio was moved to the room belonging to the distribution room of the Polish Radio. From 1963 to 1983 Experimental Studio occupied the large black room, from black, which dominated the artistic design by Oskar Hansen – born in 1922 in Helsinki, Polish architect and urbanist who died in 2005 in Warsaw , interior designer, theorist, painter, sculptor, lecturer (from 1967, professor) of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts.

It is worth recalling that the beginning of the development of electroacoustic music in Poland is closely related to the creation on 1 November 1957 of the Experimental Studio of Polish Radio, which was ready to start production in the second half of 1958 year. The time of the political thaw, which began in October 1956, favored on the one hand articulation by a group of avant-garde Polish composers the need to create a workshop that allows music to be created using electronic means, on the other hand, a decision by the Polish Radio authorities to go meet these expectations. Polish Radio became the fourth radio station in Europe (after Paris, Cologne and Milan), which joined the elite group of public broadcasters providing their technical facilities for compositional works.

Józef Patkowski played a key role in realizing the idea of creating a Polish Experimental Studio. An outstanding musicologist, acoustician, animator of musical life, later the long-term president of the Polish Composers’ Union led the studio from 1957 to 1985.
