Art’s Birthday from Chicago: two news works on Gertrude Stein & Peace in the Nuclear Age

The WFMT Radio Network is pleased to present two recent world-premiere experimental audio pieces from Chicago by composers David Lang and Augusta Read Thomas in celebration of Art’s Birthday 2018.
First: “Composition as Explanation,” by David Lang is a work based on Gertrude Stein’s 1925 text, which explores the notion of the artist’s talk in tribute to The Arts Club’s of Chicago’s legacy of cultural conversations. Performed by the ensemble Eighth Blackbird. Second: “A Plea of Peace” a vocalise for soprano and string quartet, by Augusta Read Thomas, commissioned by the University of Chicago for the reflection of the 75th Anniversary of the first human-made self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction in December 1942, under the supervision of Enrico Fermi at the University of Chicago.
